MIA denies supporting terrorism

Rapper speaks out after DeLon issues video accusation

MIA has responded to claims by Sri Lankan rapper DeLon that she supports terrorism.

In an online video on Ceylon Records website, DeLon accused the singer of supporting the Tamil Tigers, a militant group currently at war with the Sri Lankan government.

MIA‘s father is a political activist and founder of the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students, a group with links to the Tamil Tigers.

However the singer, who was born in Sri Lanka, issued a statement countering the accusations and accusing DeLon of seeking publicity, reports BBC News.

“I don’t support terrorism and never have,” she wrote. “As a Sri Lankan that fled war and bombings, my music is the voice of the civilian refugee. Frankly, I am not trying to start dialogue with someone who is really just seeking self-promotion.”
