MIA working with Hit Boy on new album

Grammy-winning producer confirms he's recorded seven tracks for the singer's new album

Jay-Z and Kanye West producer Hit Boy has confirmed he’s been working with MIA on her new album.

“The thing I’m most excited about is MIA,” he told CBS (via rap-up.com on the red carpet after his Grammy win in the Best Rap Song category for ‘Niggas In Paris’. “I just did seven songs on her new album. We just locked in the studio and just vibed and we did seven incredible records.”

He added: “She’s just like really creative,” Hit-Boy explained. “She’s doing exactly what comes to her. That’s why we were able to crank out that many songs.”

Earlier this year, a previously unreleased MIA track, ‘Doobie’, surfaced online – listen to it below. Producer Danja leaked the song as part of his Throwback Thursday blog series. The pair originally recorded the track when they teamed up to work on MIA’s ‘Bad Girls’ single, which was released in March last year.

MIA was due to release her fourth album ‘Matangi’ in late 2012. However, she recently revealed that record label Interscope were not quite convinced by her work because it was too positive. “It’s due in April, which is the Tamil new year – April 15 – and I’m still working on it,” she said.

Claiming that she had been told by her label “darken it up a bit”, she added “I thought I’d finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago. It’s like ‘We just built you up as the public enemy No 1 and now you’re coming out with all this positive stuff’.”

Speaking last year at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, the singer and rapper explained that the title of her next album refers to her own birth name, Mathangi, and also a Hindu wisdom goddess. “It’s not ‘I want to be trendy’. I just want to make music that makes sense,” she said.
