JLS score Number One debut

Plus Michael Jackson retains a firm hold on the album chart

JLS have shot straight to Number One of the UK’s Official Singles Chart with their debut ‘Beat Again’.

The self-made boyband who shot to fame last year as runners up on The X Factor, knocked Cascada‘s ‘Evacuate The Dancefloor’ into second place.

‘Beat Again’ sold over 100,000 copies to give it the biggest-selling first week for a debut single so far this year ahead of Lady Gaga‘s ‘Just Dance’ and Pixie Lott‘s ‘Mama Do’.

Only Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Bonkers’ has had higher weekly sales so far this year.

Elsewhere in the Official UK Album Charts, Michael Jackson remains a dominant presence.

‘The Essential’, the late singer’s greatest hits album, is at number one for a third consecutive week.

Jackson totals 9 albums in this week’s Top 200, four less than last week but these are all in the Top 40, according to The Official Charts Company.

‘Man In The Mirror’ is still his best-selling single in the charts this week though it drops five places to Number Eight.

He has one single in the Top 20, 5 in the Top 40 and 15 in the Top 75.

Elsewhere in the album chart Jack White‘s new band The Dead Weather went in at 14 with their debut ‘Horehound’ and Leonard Cohen‘s ‘Greatest Hits’ went in at 29.
