Billy Ray Cyrus defends daughter Miley: ‘She’s rocking and rolling and having a good time’

The singer was criticised for her revealing outfits at the MTV VMAs

Miley Cyrus‘ father Billy Ray Cyrus has told the singer to “forget the negativity and the haters”.

Miley hosted the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (August 30), receiving criticism for her revealing choice of outfits as well as accusations of cultural appropriation.

Following the criticism, Billy Ray Cyrus said to E! News, “We’ve always been very open-minded… She’s rocking and rolling and having a good time. What the world needs is love. There’s too much hate… The world needs positive influences.”

He continued, “Even when she was a little girl, we told her, ‘Hey, baby, do what you do and have fun doing it. Do it because you love it, not because you have to’. Seeing her happy is the greatest thing ever.”

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week, Miley was asked what her father thought of her fashion sense. She replied, “My dad would rather me have my tits out and be a good person than have a shirt on and be a bitch.”

Miley Cyrus clashed with Nicki Minaj at the MTV VMAs over the weekend, with the rapper/singer labelling Cyrus a “bitch”.

Cyrus had previously spoken to The New York Times about Minaj’s beef with Taylor Swift, saying that it was “not very polite” of Minaj. Cyrus was quoted as saying, “What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite.”

Accepting the award for Best Hip-Hop Video for ‘Anaconda’, Minaj said, “And now, back to this bitch who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?” Cyrus proceeded to suggest that her remarks had been taken out of context, but Minaj seemed to reject Cyrus’ excuses.
