Organisers deny claim that Morrissey will play Manchester’s Summer in the City festival

James guitarist Larry Gott claimed singer will play Castleford show in July

Organisers of Manchester’s Summer In The City festival have denied claims by James guitarist Larry Gott that the local hero will return for a show in July.

James and Pixies are the only headliners confirmed for this year’s Summer In The City, with Starsailor and Royal Blood to support on July 10 and 11 respectively. Speaking to Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music yesterday (March 6), Gott claimed that Morrissey will also play live, with an official announcement yet to be made.

Frontman Tim Booth told Laverne about the band’s upcoming Manchester date, saying: “We’re playing Manchester Castlefield [Bowl]. There’s a festival that they’re starting – we’re headlining one night, the Pixies are doing another night. I don’t know the other two nights…” to which Gott replied: “The National and Morrissey.”

Booth attempted to brush over Gott’s claim, saying: “Oh, we’re getting signs from our minders saying, ‘Don’t tell them! Don’t tell them!’ Apparently we’re not meant to talk about some of this stuff.”

However, in a statement given to Manchester Evening News, promoters dismissed Gotts claims, stating: “Event organisers are unaware of any plans to put Morrissey on in Manchester at all this summer.”

Earlier this year Morrissey announced two major US arena shows with very unusual support acts: veteran performers Sir Tom Jones and Sir Cliff Richard. In a statement, Morrissey said he was “honoured and thrilled” to have Jones and Richard on the bills.

Morrissey will release a new album later this year. The singer, who released his autobiography in October, has signed a new, worldwide record deal with Universal Music’s US-based Harvest Records. In a statement, he said he was “thrilled” to ink the deal.
