Vampire Weekend, Haim join the band onstage to cover Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain'
Mumford and Sons headlined their own one day festival at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park last night (July 6) in Stratford, London.
The band – who closed out the Pyramid Stage last weekend at Glastonbury festival – told the 60,000 strong, hometown crowd that they were far better than the audience at Worthy Farm, with keyboard player Ben Lovett saying: “Were any of you lot at Glastonbury last weekend? It was a very pleasant experience… [but] you guys are shit loads better than that gig ever was.” The band’s banjo player Winston Marshall added: “Probably because you haven’t done as many drugs as the people there.”
The band came onstage at 8.45pm, opening their set with the title track from their second studio album, 2012’s ‘Babel’. “How you doing London?” said frontman Marcus Mumford. “We can’t tell you how happy we are to be home. Thanks so much for coming tonight.”
Lovett went on to explain that the day, which also saw sets from Vampire Weekend, Ben Howard, Haim, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Bear’s Den, was one of his best ever. “I think this has been one of my favourite days of my whole life, hands down, no questions asked… Partially down to the bands that played today… and thanks to you 60,000 beautiful London people. We’re so grateful to all of you.”
The band finished the show with an encore of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’, during which they were accompanied by members of Vampire Weekend, Haim and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. During the rendition of the song, Marcus Mumford shouted out ‘Ted’s alive!’, referencing the bass player’s recent brain surgery. Mumford & Sons also covered Bruce Springsteen’s ‘I’m On Fire’ during the gig, with all four members of the band gathering around a single microphone to play a hushed acoustic version of the track.
“We decided that you are without a doubt the best crowd we’ve ever played in front of ever,” said Mumford at the end of the evening. “We love you very, very much.”
