Muse on ‘The 2nd Law’: ‘We’re singing about relationships for the first time’

The Devon trio give some more details about their forthcoming sixth studio album

Muse have spoken about their forthcoming album ‘The 2nd Law’ and have revealed it is much more personal record than their previous efforts.

‘The 2nd Law’ is due to be released on October 1 in the UK and October 2 in the US. It includes new singles ‘Madness’ and ‘Survival’ as well as dubstep-influenced track ‘The 2nd Law: Unsustainable’. The 13-track album is the follow-up to 2009’s ‘The Resistance’ and has been recorded in London.

Speaking to the New Zealand Herald about the record, Matt Bellamy revealed that he has been writing about his own private life for the first time since the band’s 1999 debut album ‘Showbiz’.

He said of this: “”We’re singing about things like relationships for the first time. Actually, I did that for a bit on the first album [1999’s ‘Showbiz’] but then I started doing interviews and thought, ‘Oh my God, I can’t answer these questions they’re getting too personal’. So that’s when we started getting all conceptual and pretending the album was about the end of the world, or whatever,”

Bellamy also spoke about the band’s ambitions for the album and said that the band are always looking to break “new ground and find new sounds to play with”.

He added: “Every album we do we try to find new ground and new sounds to play with and new instruments, new styles of songwriting and new styles of production. Because change is what creates momentum in a band and I think we’re lucky, all three of us are very open to exploring new avenues.”

He continued: “So with this album we just set out on this same old objective that we normally have and just discovered some new things along the way.”

The Devon trio will tour the UK in October, playing five shows. The gigs begin at Glasgow’s SECC on October 24, before the band move onto London’s O2 Arena for two shows on October 26 and 27. They then play Birmingham LG Arena on October 30 before finishing up at Manchester Arena on November 1.

The band will also play the iTunes Festival this month, headlining London’s Roundhouse on September 30.
