Alex Winter, otherwise known as Bill S Preston Esq, the foil to Keanu Reeves’ Ted Theodore Logan in the Bill And Ted movies, is set to direct a film about Napster.
Napster was the illegal music and firesharing site popular in the late 1990s. One of its creators, Sean Parker was recently portrayed by Justin Timberlake in The Social Network.
According to Indiewire: “The subject has long fascinated Winter and he has been trying to get a movie made about it for the last decade.” Winter’s dream has now come true, and he’ll be working with VH1 to make a documentary on the subject.
Winter himself told Deadline:
The rise and fall of Napster and the birth of peer-to-peer filesharing technology created by Shawn Fanning when he was a college student, changed music to movies, and made possible everything from Julian Assange, WikiLeaks to the iPod and Facebook.
It became an expression of youth revolt, and contributed to a complete shift in how information, media and governments work. And it is a fascinating human story, where this 18-year-old kid invents a peer-to-peer filesharing system and brings it to the world six months later.
