Nelly fans are streaming ‘Hot In Herre’ on loop to help him pay his tax bill

It could take them a while, though...

Nelly fans are streaming his classic hit ‘Hot In Herre’ on loop in a bid to help him pay off his tax bill.

Following reports that the rapper owes a seven-figure sum to the IRS, fans have been trying to get the hashtag #HotInHerreStreamingParty trending on Twitter. “pro tip: turn your phone to mute and put on “hot in herre” while you sleep tonight. 7 hours sleep = 110 plays,” one fan tweeted.

TMZ reported yesterday (September 12) that the rapper owes $2,412,283 in Federal taxes – equivalent to over £1.8 million. Nelly is also said to owe $149,511 (£113,000) in taxes to the state of Missouri in a separate debt that dates back to 2013.

However, fans will need to remain persistent if they are to help Nelly get back into credit. Spin reports that the rapper will need to amass at least 280 million streams to clear his debt, given that Spotify typically awards artists less a hundredth of a cent per play.

Produced by The Neptunes, ‘Hot In Herre’ was originally released in 2002 and peaked at Number One in the US and Number Four In the UK. Nelly performed the song with Haim and Taylor Swift during Swift’s gig in his hometown of St Louis last year (2015).
