N.E.R.D have unveiled their first new song in four years, entitled ‘Squeeze Me’ – scroll down to listen.
The group, featuring Pharrell Williams, Shay Haley and Chad Hugo, have recorded the track as part of the soundtrack for the forthcoming SpongeBob SquarePants film – set for release on January 28.
The song is the first for the reunited band since their 2010 LP ‘Nothing’.
Speaking about the track to Variety, meanwhile, Hugo compared ‘Squeeze Me’ to The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ – the title track of their animated film of the same name. “We’re trying not to think too much in a cartoon sense, but more just like a psychedelic, otherworldly type of thing,” Hugo said. “If you want to draw a parallel, maybe think of what the Beatles did with ‘Yellow Submarine’.”
NERD formed in 2000 and have released four studio LPs since then.
Earlier this year during Pharrell Williams’ solo show at London’s iTunes Festival, the singer brought on Haley and hinted at a new album for the trio. Performing a number of tracks from the group’s back catalogue including ‘She Wants To Move’ and ‘Rock Star’, the pair told the crowd they were “gonna like this shit we’re gonna release”.
