Neutral Milk Hotel played their first gig in 15 years this weekend (October 11).
Jeff Mangum reunited with the band at St. John’s Church in Baltimore for the first in a lengthy string of dates to mark their comeback.
The band performed an 18-song set which included material from both their studio albums, 1996’s ‘On Avery Island’ and 1998’s ‘In The Aeroplane Over The Sea’ as well as tracks from their 1994 EP ‘Everything Is’.

Neutral Milk Hotel will continue to tour extensively through the US, Australia, and New Zealand before making their way over to the UK next spring, playing Dublin Vicar Street on May 16, 2014, followed by Manchester Albert Hall on May 18, Glasgow Barrowland on May 19 and London’s Roundhouse on May 21. They will then play two shows in France before appearances at Primavera Sound and Optimus Primavera Sound festivals in Barcelona, Spain (May 29-31, 2014) and Porto, Portugal (5-7 June, 2014).
The cult band have been on hiatus since their last studio album – 1998’s ‘In The Aeroplane Over The Sea’ and its subsequent tour. Aside from a 2001 live album and a 2002 album of Bulgarian music, the band have been keeping a low profile – although singer Jeff Mangum played a string of solo dates in 2010 and curated ATP at Butlins in Minehead in March last year.
The touring line-up of the band will consist of Mangum, Scott Spillane, Julian Koster and Jeremy Barnes.
