Nicki Minaj says rap music in 2018 is ‘kumbaya and goody-goody’

The Queens rapper lamented bandwagon-jumpers in a new interview

Nicki Minaj has spoken about the current state of rap music, describing it as “kumbaya and goody-goody”.

The New York rapper is due to release ‘Queen’, her first album in four years, later this summer. She has already shared three songs from the record in ‘Barbie Tingz‘, ‘Chun-Li’, and ‘Rich Sex‘.

Speaking to Elle, Minaj discussed her views on rap in 2018. After the interview noted that the rappers that have come after her have been less respectful to her than she has been to her predecessors, she said: “I don’t know how much of that I should talk about because ‘I’m the bad guy.'”

After saying the genre is in a “kumbaya and goody-goody moment”, she added: “That’s what I’m just realising. That’s not the kind of rap I grew up on. But rap is different now. You gotta pretend you like people and stuff. Everybody’s gotta get on the bandwagon. They get on the love bandwagon, and they get on the hate bandwagon.

“They hate people they don’t really hate, and they love people they don’t really love,” she continued.

Earlier in the interview, Minaj said trap music had “taken over so much that even our New York rappers are doing nothing but trap songs”. Asked if that was a reference to Cardi B, with whom she is alleged to have had a beef, the rapper responded: “I don’t think there’s any one person doing trap music right now. I think the whole industry is doing trap music.”

Pressed on why she mentioned New York rappers specifically, Minaj replied: “Well, maybe I shouldn’t have said that. Maybe I should’ve said, ‘Me as a New York artist.'”

The star is set to release ‘Bed’, her latest collaboration with Ariana Grande, tomorrow (June 14). It will also feature on ‘Queen’, which is set for release on August 10.

Minaj has also confirmed a series of UK and Ireland arena dates, where she will be joined by Future. Tickets for the tour will go on sale on Friday (June 15) at 10am and will be available to purchase here.
