Nine Inch Nails unveil video for ‘Came Back Haunted’ – watch

Trent Reznor drafts in David Lynch to direct startling promo clip for the track

Nine Inch Nails have unveiled a new music video for ‘Came Back Haunted’. Click ‘play’ above to watch it.

It’s the first track from their upcoming album, ‘Hesitation Marks’, which will be released on September 3. The video was directed by filmmaker David Lynch, best known for his work on cult TV series Twin Peaks and movies such as Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive.

This isn’t the first time Lynch and Reznor have teamed up, with the pair previously collaborating on the soundtrack for Lynch’s 1997 film Lost Highway. That film also featured the Nine Inch Nails song ‘The Perfect Drug’, which was one of the only new NIN tracks to surface between their 1994 album ‘The Downward Spiral’ and 1999’s ‘The Fragile’.

‘Hesitation Marks’ – which features guest appearances by bassist Pino Palladino, who regularly plays with The Who, and Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham – is the band’s follow-up to ‘The Slip’, released in 2008. Speaking to CBS recently, frontman Trent Reznor talked about the band’s line-up, which has consistently changed over the years.

He said: “You can spend a lot of time hypothesising, imagining and projecting what it’s going to be with this chemistry and this recipe of people in a room playing music, and in reality it rarely is that. It’s felt like a wrench in the works at times, but at the same time it’s made me rethink a lot of how we put this together, and I think where we’re ending up at is a place that’s much truer to what Nine Inch Nails should be and better in the long run.”

Earlier this month (June), guitarist Adrian Belew revealed he was quitting the band after joining for ‘Hesitation Marks’, saying it had been “disruptive”. Belew became the second band member to leave Nine Inch Nails in less than a month. Bassist Eric Avery announced his departure on May 15, saying he had felt “overwhelmed” by “all the intensity that Nails demands”.
