Current tenant says there 'hasn’t been much interest' in the late Nirvana singer’s home
The Los Angeles apartment where Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love lived from 1991-92 can be rented on Airbnb.
Current tenant Brandon Kleinman charges guests $150 (£100) per night to stay in the two-bedroom, 1500 square-foot apartment. Interior designer Kleinman says he has actually listed the apartment with Airbnb for “a couple of years”, but that the holiday rental firm “buried” his listing.
Love was pregnant with the couple’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain while she lived in the apartment with Cobain, who regularly painted art during his stay in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles. Kleinman told Vulture that he hopes to remove layers of paint at the property to see if any of Cobain’s old artwork can still be seen.
The couple left in 1992 when Love was eight months pregnant because of faulty plumbing and a leak that damaged their possessions, including Cobain’s guitars and journals. In 2014, photos emerged of the apartment taken shortly after Cobain and Love left. It was littered with rubbish and graffiti.
Kleinman, who says he has been told that Cobain wrote Nirvana song ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ in the apartment, has rented the property since 2011 and advertises it on Airbnb as “Kurt Cobain’s Private 1b + 1bh”. He said he learned of its history after signing the rental agreement. “It gets rented out about four or five times a year,” said Kleinman. “I think Airbnb buried the listing for some reason and I don’t get a lot of interest in it.” He added that Nirvana fans, usually “weird older gentlemen”, ask to see the apartment “every 60 days or so”.
Nirvana documentary Montage Of Heck was recently released in cinemas, while Frances Bean Cobain said that she prefers Oasis to her late father’s band.
