Rare interviews with Nirvana have been made officially available to listen to online for the first time – click here to listen to them.
Recorded between 1990 and 1992 by then Metal Hammer journalist James Sherry, the three interviews were originally released on CD in 2004. In them, the grunge band speak about their growing success, signing to a major label and their classic album ‘Nevermind’.
In one clip, the group explain their reaction to being treated like rock stars, saying, “At first we were floored by it. We couldn’t believe that punk rock people would want autographs. The underground seems to have completely reversed itself.”
Speaking before the release of ‘Nevermind’, Nirvana described the album as “a good mixture of commercial accessibility and still staying grunge”. Talking on the phone after the record had gone platinum, Krist Novoselic said the band were enjoying their success.
“It’s interesting to see what the heck’s going on,” he said. “A lot of people walk up to me like ‘You’re the bass player from Nirvana, aren’t you? Can you sign my shirt?’ and it’s like, I don’t really wanna ruin your clothes. It’s starting to get more and more, especially as we do more TV shows.”
Last month, Nirvana’s 1993 album ‘In Utero’ was reissued to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the record. The package features B-sides, demos and live tracks, plus unreleased bonus material.
