it was hoped the move to Sunday would breathe new life into the show...
’TOP OF THE POPS’ has lost more than half of its available audience since switching channels last month.
After years in decline, the British pop institution was moved from Friday night BBC1 to Sunday night BBC2.
It was hoped that the shift would breathe new life into the show, which had suffered due to the decline of the British singles market, the fact that it was broadcast a week after the chart’s publication, and its scheduling against ITV1 show Coronation Street.
However, MediaGuardian reports that after three outings in its new slot, the show has averaged 1.1million viewers and a 6% audience share compared with a 2.4million average in its old slot.
The new-look ’Top Of The Pops’ is presented by Fearne Cotton, and is broadcast straight after the weekly chart on Radio 1, and combines music news and archive elements of the TOTP2 nostalgia show.
