John Whitehead is killed by a mystery assailant as he mends his car...

R&B star JOHN WHITEHEAD has been shot dead.

The 55-year-old singer, best known for his 1979 hit ‘Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now’, was killed while mending his car with another man in Philadelphia’s West Oak Lane neighbourhood, reports the BBC.

Whitehead was shot in the neck by a mystery assailant who then fled the scene. The other man was shot in the buttocks and taken to hospital. Whitehead’s singing partner Gene McFadden was quick to the scene of the shooting, and stood trembling.

The two men formed sang together as The Epsilons as teenagers, when they were managed by Otis Redding, and later as McFadden And Whitehead. ‘Ain’t No Stopping Us Now’ made Number One in the US R&B chart, and was later covered by Luther Vandross. The pair also wrote hits for The Jacksons and James Brown.
