And it's only the second day of release…

BAND AID 20 has sold almost 100,000 copies on its first day of sales, putting it on an easy course to reach number one.

Mercury Records, who have released the single on behalf of the Band Aid Trust, reckon that yesterday’s sales (November 29) totalled 95,000 copies.

The new version of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’, which features Chris Martin, Bono and Sugababes, is expected to top the chart on Sunday and stay at number one until Christmas.

According to the Scotsman, many stores opened especially at 8am to allow people to buy a copy on their way to work. HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: “Even though we don’t think it will match (the 1984 original), it will certainly be a million seller and raise the profile of the problems in Africa.”

The original Band Aid single sold 750,000 copies in its first week, going on to sell 3,500,000 copies.
