The ex-hubby of Mariah Carey is set to launch a new music venture....

TOMMY MOTTOLA, one of the most powerful men in the recording industry, has resigned as chairman as SONY MUSIC.

Mottola, the former husband of Mariah Carey

and the man called a devil by an upset Jennifer Lopez last year, announced his resignation yesterday (January 9). It is effective immediately. He has been with Sony for 14 years and been in the top seat since 1998. He is now going to launch a new music venture in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment.

“I have been thinking about taking up this new challenge for about a year, and really made the decision to go forward only recently,” he said in a statement. “I am thrilled that I will continue my long-standing relationship with Sony to create a company that I believe will become a blueprint for the music business in the coming years.”

Mottola helped guide the career of Hall & Oates in the 70s and 80s, but became a personality in his own right when he helped Mariah Carey

He came across a demo from Carey shortly after he joined Sony. At the time she was an 18-year-old waitress. He divorced his first wife in 1990, married Carey

three years later and helped her become the biggest selling female artist of the 90s. They divorced in 1998, she left Sony a short time later and her career has never recovered.
