The 'Pop Idol' runner-up out-sells Britney Spears by two to one...

POP IDOL runner-up GARETH GATES has scored a third week at Number One on tonight’s chart (April 7) with his cover of ‘Unchained Melody’.

The 17-year-old’s debut single out-sold Britney Spears’ ‘I’m Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman’ by more than two to one. Britney entered at Number Two.

X-Ecutioners were the only other new entry in the Top Ten, with ‘It’s Goin’ Down’ at Number Seven. Shakira’s ‘Whenever Wherever’ was a non-mover at Number Three, Ali G and Shaggy fell two places to Number Four with ‘Me Julie’, and Nickelback moved up one to Number Five with ‘How You Remind Me’.

Other new entries in this week’s Top 40 include Sheryl Crow with ‘Soak Up The Sun’ at 16, ‘Everywhere’ by Michelle Branch at 18, and Ladies First with a cover of ‘I Can’t Wait’ at 19.

Stereophonics could only manage Number 23 with their new single ‘Vegas Two Times’, while Elton John scraped into the 40 with ‘Original Sin’ at Number 39.

On the album chart, Celine Dion’s ‘A New Day Has Come’ holds on to the top spot. Darren Hayes has the highest new entry, with ‘Spin’ at Number Two, while Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Release’ is a new entry at Number Seven.
