A man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a teenage girl in a beer tent at the V2001 festival in CHEMLSFORD

An 18-year-old man from London was arrested just after midnight on Saturday (August 18) after his alleged victim, described by police simply as a 16-year-old from Norfolk, said she was raped in a beer tent behind the main arena. The man was questioned and bailed pending further enquiries. He will have to return to Essex police on September 19.

It was the only serious incident that marred an otherwise peaceful and good natured event. Superintendent Dave Folkerd co-ordinating the event praised the behaviour of concert goers – estimated to number 50,000 on each of the two days at Hylands Park near Chelmsford

– and said he looked forward to having them back next year.

Only 14 people were arrested in total, most for minor drugs and public order offences.

A police spokesperson also played down an incident when a man managed to get onstage during Kylie Minogue‘s set on Saturday and attempted to reach the singer. He said the man was arrested for breach of the peace, a very minor offence, and appeared to be little more than an over-eager fan. The man was not carrying any weapons and did not appear to be a serious threat to Kylie, he added.
