Veteran Radio 1 DJ John Peel is now an OBE thanks to the weekend Queen's Birthday honours list...
John Peel, the veteran UK DJ (and Number One fan of The Fall), was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list on Saturday.
Peel is the longest-serving Radio 1 jock, starting with the station when it launched in 1967. He says of his Order of the British Empire: “My mum and dad will be knocked out. And it’lI really piss off my brothers. I accepted it hoping that being John Peel OBE might help me get a season ticket at Anfield!”
NME awarded John Peel the ‘Godlike Genius’ trophy at the 1996 NME Brat Awards ceremony for his extended support of independent and alternative music on his world famous John Peel Show.
