The X Factor winner James Arthur’s single ‘Impossible’ is on course for the Number One sport with sales of 255,000 in the midweek chart.
Despite ‘X Factor’ viewing figures falling to a six-year low, Arthur’s single has already beaten the total of Little Mix’s opening week last year, when ‘Cannonball’ sold 210,000. ‘Impossible’ has already beaten 2012’s previous biggest first week total of 152,000 which was achieved by Cheryl’s ‘Call My Name’ in June.
Arthur, from Middlesbrough, beat competition from both Jahmene Douglas and Christopher Maloney in the final last weekend, which ran for four hours of television across Saturday and Sunday night (December 8, 9), earning a contract with Simon Cowell’s SyCo in the process. His win was watched by 11 million people, the lowest figure that ITV have seen for The X Factor Final since 2006. The figure pales into comparison when put alongside the 17 million viewers who tuned in to see Matt Cardle win the competition in 2010.
His single, a cover of Shontelle’s ‘Impossible’, went onsale immediately after his win on December 9. 100% of the proceeds from the single will go to the children’s charity Together For Short Lives.
In the album chart, Bruno Mars is set to have a second chart-topping album with ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’. The follow-up to 2010’s ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ is outselling its closest competitor, Michael Buble’s ‘Christmas’ by 22,000 copies as of the midweek chart.
