The Wombats play Glasgow Shockwaves NME Awards show

Plus the Liverpool band rate their chances at next week's (Feb 28) ceremony

The Wombats have declared the audience at their Shockwaves NME Awards Show in Glasgow last night (February 21) as one of their best ever crowds.

Speaking to NME.COM straight after their sold out gig at the Glasgow Barrowlands, the Liverpool band admitted they were a bit in awe of the enthusiastic punters.

Bassist Tord Øverland-Knudsen explained: “This was just such a big gig, it’s a weird feeling. I always believed in the band, but to get this far is just incredible. It’s the biggest kick you can get, when you go out there and 2,000 people sing back all the words.”

Supported by the anthemic Glasvegas, The Wombats wowed the capacity crowd with every track from their album, a Norwegian version of the ‘Postman Pat’ theme, and introduced a new track – ‘How To Pack Your Bags And Leave’.

Looking ahead to next week’s (February 28) Shockwaves NME Awards drummer Dan Haggis played down the band’s chances of winning the Best New Band Award, despite their recent cover.

“We’d love to win Best New Band, but we won’t,” he mused. “The Enemy will win it.”

Øverland-Knudsen added: “The other bands are way bigger, we’re kinda of a newer band – the album only came out in November. You never know, though.”
