Shockwaves NME Awards Shows go nationwide

Manchester and Glasgow join in the action in 2008

The Shockwaves NME Awards Shows are taking place across the UK for the first time ever in 2008.

Since the shows launched in 1996 at the London Astoria, the gigs we’ve staged ahead of the ceremony have grown each year into a month-long festival of music every February.

Although the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour has made sure the whole country has felt the build-up each year with its nationwide dates, fans have told us they want more live music and we’ve listened.

That means this time around along side the month of gigs taking place in London, we are also staging 19 gigs in Glasgow and Manchester during February.

“The regional Shows for the Shockwaves NME Awards are something we’ve been working on for a long time, so I’m delighted to be able to announce it’s finally happening,” explained NME editor Conor McNicholas. “For the last few years I’ve spoken to music fans across the UK who have – despite the excitement of the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour – eyed the London shows jealously and complained about the focus on the capital. I wanted to change that and finally we can now bring this celebration of live music to both Manchester and Glasgow. Doing the gigs is an achievement in itself but doing it with this brilliant line-up is amazing. Today Manchester and Glasgow. Tomorrow, well, who knows where it might end?”
