Arctic Monkeys planned ‘EastEnders’ ‘recreation’ at Shockwaves NME Awards

Plus Matt Helders is worried what his Nan thinks of the trophies

Arctic Monkeys were so taken with the Shockwaves NME Awards taking place at the IndigO2 in London they were planning to make the most of the location with a special reconstruction.

Speaking to NME.COM after picking up three awards – Best Track, Best Video and Best British Band – at the ceremony last night (February 28), the Sheffield group said they wanted to act out British soap ‘EastEnders’.

“I thought I’d recreate a scene of ’EastEnders’ where Grant and Phil (Mitchell) had a fight because that was outside the Millennium Dome,” declared drummer Matt Helders, with frontman Alex Turner quickly agreeing: “Yes, I’ll join you in that.”

The pair were referring to a showdown between two of the soap’s most notorious characters which took place at the Greenwich venue which has since been renamed as the O2 Arena and IndigO2.

The band also added they will not be putting their trophies on display for fear of offending their relatives.

“It’s a bit offensive really,” declared Helders. “What if my Nan comes around? She might be insulted!”
