Noel Gallagher: ‘Liam should have been beaten up in Canada not me’

Guitarist jokes his assault in 2008 was a case of mistaken identiy

Noel Gallagher has joked that he suffered a case of mistaken identity when he was assaulted onstage in Canada in 2008 and that it was brother Liam who should have been the victim.

Gallagher suffered the onstage assault while playing V Festival in Toronto in September 2008, when 47-year old Daniel Sullivan attacked him and left him with three broken ribs. Sullivan subsequently pleaded guilty to assaulting Gallagher and was eventually sentenced to 12 months house arrest.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror about the incident, Gallagher said of it: “That had nothing to do with me. That guy was a fucking moron. Why would he attack me and not Liam? C’mon. That’s all I wanted to say to him afterwards: ‘Leave me alone. I write the fucking songs. Fuck up the guy over there with the glasses’.”

Noel Gallagher released his debut solo album ‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ last month and is currently touring in support of it. He will play a UK arena tour in February.
