NOEL’S NOTES

Books of scribbles, doodles and ideas expected to fetch up to #6000 at auction...

Noel Gallagher‘s notebook from around 1993 is to go under the hammer at Christie’s auctioneers on December 10 and is expected to raise 4,000-6,000 pounds.

The notebook, described as “Noel’s masterplan for OASIS” by Creation, is being sold by a mystery female vendor. Christie‘s sold two sets of Noel’s sold for 1,000 pounds in April this year. The spiral-bound student notebook is lot Number 184 in the auction at Christie‘s in South Kensington, London and contains track listings and suggested concepts for albums and singles. Look at Noel’s back pages.

Christies‘ catalogue entry states: “This notebook gives a fascinating insight into Oasis‘ repertoire and Noel‘s detailed plans for the band’s future at around the time that they signed to Creation Records in 1993. Several of the potential track listings are almost identical to the band’s first full-length demo tape, recorded in spring 1993 – it was this eight-track demo which is said to have finally clinched the band a deal.”

The book reveals Noel suggested the title ‘Datura Dream Rebound’ for Oasis‘ first album, ‘Definitely Maybe’, and planned to include their first Christmas single, ‘Whatever’, as the final track. ‘Whatever’ never made it on to an Oasis album. He also planned to release ‘Bring It On Down’ as their debut single. (They eventually released ‘Supersonic’.)

One set of lyrics for an unreleased song, ‘Is That A Fact?’, is a look into the relationship of the Gallagher brothers. The song begins: “Alright I’m going home/Don’t want to hear your voice no more… What’s that you say?/You never liked me anyway!?/Is that a fact??Well I don’t care/What you need is a real good hiding/’Coz with you I’ve been siding all my life/I know you’re my brother/But only because you came from my mother/Time and time again/I’ve seen what you’re really like”. related news

Other unreleased lyrics include ‘Tracksuit Bottoms’: “I’ve been watching you/You over there in your tracksuit bottoms/What’s your problem with the world?” and ‘I Am Always Right’: “‘Cos I’m the man who’s done and seen all that there has ever been/And I’m always right!!”.

Lyrics to a song called ‘Chill’ hint at the time when Noel joined LIAM‘s old band RAIN to form Oasis back in 1992. It goes: “The rain’s long gone/It’s time to make it mine/When it all comes down you’ll be asking me for spare change/But a dollar won’t save you from the chill”.

Also in the notebook is a set of lyrics in NOEL‘s hand for DAVID BOWIE‘s ‘Heroes’, covered on the b-side of their 1997 single ‘D’you Know What I Mean?’ Click back tomorrow (Dec 4) at 12 noon to see some pages from Noel‘s notebook.
