Noel Gallagher on Bowie-influenced new album: ‘I remain fucking totally awesome’

Ex-Oasis man is 'in the studio' working on his third album with High Flying Birds

Noel Gallagher has issued an update on his next album and plans for the year ahead.

The former Oasis guitarist, who released his most recent album ‘Chasing Yesterday’ in February 2015 with his band the High Flying Birds, previously teased plans for his next album last year, now confirming that recording sessions are ongoing.

“I’m in the studio at the minute,” Gallagher has told Rolling Stone. “I’m in the middle of fucking about.”

“I’m doing some stuff that, this time in particular, will get really, properly ignored in America,” he added. “I don’t just mean ignored like the rest of ’em. I mean properly ignored. That’s what I’m aiming for: total, total anonymity. I’m sick and tired of being in New York and being pestered by one person a month. That’s gotta fucking stop.”

Gallagher also suggested that there is a David Bowie influence on his new music. After recently naming his favourite Bowie songs, Noel has also admitted that one of the new songs borrows from Bowie’s ‘The Jean Genie’.

“I’ve nicked a little bit of that,” Gallagher said. “The ‘woo-hoo!’. You’ll hear that sooner or later in one of my tracks.”

Asked of his plans for 2016, Gallagher replied: “I remain fucking totally awesome. In 2016, I’m as awesome as I was in the back end of 2015. My hair is impeccable; it’s not showing any signs of thinning, at all. I’m fuckin’ thriving. Thriving!”

Speaking previously about his next album, Gallagher said last year: “From what I’ve done at the moment, sonically it sounds different, but it will still be very melodic and all that.”

“It’s a new way of working for me, and I’m finding it very difficult, or very slow. So it’s like writing and recording as you go along, so there’s no sitting down writing all the songs and then going to record them, you’re kind of doing that in the studio, so that takes a lot longer, but the results at the moment are quite good.”
