Noel Gallagher dedicates ‘Supersonic’ to Mo Farah at V Festival

The Stone Roses play triumphant 90 minute set at Hylands Park

Noel Gallagher dedicated Oasis track ‘Supersonic’ to double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah at V Festival last night (August 18).

In a set packed with material from his debut solo album, along with classic Oasis tracks, Gallagher wowed the large crowd on the Virgin Media Stage at the festival in Chelmsford.

Before playing a special, acoustic version of ‘Supersonic’, Noel dedicated the track to Olympic 10,000m and 5,000m champion Mo Farah and received a rapturous response from the enthusiastic crowd. You can watch a video of the performance below.

Fans were in a cheeky mood and, at one point, some were heard chanting “where’s Liam? Where’s Liam?”, to which Noel responded, “where’s Ian? He’s backstage,” referring to The Stone Roses frontman.

The legendary ‘Madchester’ band closed the first day of the Hylands Park leg of V Festival 2012 last night with an ecstatic set that lasted 90 minutes.

Ian Brown arrived on stage in a specially created windbreaker jacket, adorned with artwork from the band’s first album. “Do you like me jacket?” he asked the band before launching into ‘I Wanna Be Adored’. After ‘Mersey Paradise’ turned into a singalong he cheekily remarked, “That’s nice of you, you wouldn’t be seen dead near the Mersey, am I right?”

The band played every song bar ‘Bye Bye Badman’ from their legendary 1989 debut, as well as ‘Where Angels Play’, ‘Fools Gold’, ‘Love Spreads’, ‘Ten Storey Love Song’, ‘Something’s Burning’ and ‘Sally Cinnamon’. Their set finished with a huge firework display as ‘I Am The Resurrection’ came to its spectacular conclusion. The band left the stage to Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’.

“I’ve waited my whole life to see this,” one fan told NME after the show. “It was spectacular.” The Stone Roses continue their epic summer comeback gigs tonight when they play V Festival at Weston Park, Staffordshire.

Earlier in the day, Rizzle Kicks played a successful set, interspersing their hits with skits and dance-offs. “It’s been a great year for Britain,” announced Jordan, “We had the Olympics. We had the Jubilee. We’re doing great at sport, but the most exciting thing is that there’s a new James Bond film coming out in November, so we’re going to skank.” The duo then danced around the stage to the Bond theme.

Meanwhile, Reverend and the Makers’s Jon McClure embarked on a trademark rant about real music, telling fans to watch The Stone Roses and The Charlatans because they are “proper fucking music, with guitars, no cheating”.

Childish Gambino suffered technical difficulties during his set, so filled time with an impressive freestyle in which he rhymed V Fest with incest. Once his band were plugged back in they played a version of Jamie XX’s remix of Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’.

Backstage was busy with liggers and Professor Green could be seen hanging out with his girlfriend Millie Mackintosh from Made In Chelsea and their new puppy, a grey bulldog. The Gossip’s Beth Ditto was also spotted in a Lil Wayne T-shirt, reading a copy of NME.

V Festival in Hylands Park continues today (August 19) with sets from The Killers, Snow Patrol and Tinie Tempah. LMFAO have been bumped up to headline the 4 Music stage after Nicki Minaj pulled out due to “ongoing vocal issues”.
