Primal Scream pay tribute to Kurt Cobain during Milan gig

Bobby Gillespie performs a verse of Nirvana’s 1993 single 'Heart-Shaped Box'

Primal Scream‘s current European tour continued at Milan’s Alcatraz on Wednesday (November 20), offering an insight into their eagerly-anticipated UK shows next month.

The band, led by Bobby Gillespie, will perform a string of UK shows in December, taking in shows in London, Glasgow and Manchester. Drawing heavily from the band’s recently-released 10th studio album ‘More Light’, the Alcatraz set also made room for a whole host of their signature tracks from ‘Screamadelica’ onwards.

Performing in the Alcatraz venue, the set opened with a stripped back version of ‘2013’, seeming to eschew the bells and whistles of the David Holmes-produced studio version. It proved to be something of a recurring theme that the newer songs – like ‘Culturecide’ and ‘Tenement Kid’ – sounding rougher and rawer than they do on record. With the first half of the set focussing largely on tracks from ‘More Light’, the crowd took a while to warm up, but once they did – on the smoky soul anthem of ‘Walking With The Beast’ – the show soon ramped up in intensity, as Gillespie and co treated them to a slew of live favourites, including ‘Autobahn 66’ and ‘Swastika Eyes’.

After ‘Country Girl’ had segued seamlessly into ‘Rocks’, Gillespie returned for the encore wearing a gold lamé shirt and told the crowd that “we’re going to play quite a few songs from the ‘Screamadelica’ album.” They played three tracks from their seminal 1991 album: first up was ‘Higher Than The Sun’, which Gillespie dedicated to Kurt Cobain after singing a verse of Nirvana’s 1993 single ‘Heart-Shaped Box’. After rapturously-received versions of ‘I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have’ and ‘Loaded’, the set ended on a euphoric ‘Movin’ On Up’, with the frontman staying onstage well after his band had left, soaking up the applause and high-fiving audience members.
