Ice Cube on NWA’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snub: ‘It sucks’

The rapper and actor has called for a Hip Hop Hall of Fame

Ice Cube has spoken out about NWA‘s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snub.

The iconic hip hop group were nominated for induction into the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but failed to make the final cut, with the committee voting for Nirvana, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall And Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt instead.

Now Ice Cube has said that the fact they weren’t included “sucks” but was “understandable”. Speaking to AP, the rapper and actor said: “It sucks. But it’s understandable. We really only had one album together… But this just lets you know how much we need a hip-hop hall of fame of our own.”

Artists are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. The svengalis behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones will also be honoured at next month’s ceremony, with the late Brian Epstein and Andrew Loog Oldham sharing the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers.

Alongside NWA, nominees who did not make the cut in the vote for induction this year include The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, LL Cool J, The Meters, The Replacements, Link Wray, Yes and The Zombies.

The induction ceremony is due to take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 10. If Dave Grohl turns up to collect the honour on behalf of Nirvana, it will be his second on-stage appearance at the Hall Of Fame induction in a row – in 2013, he and fellow Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins took to the stage to induct Rush. “When the fuck did Rush become cool?!” Grohl joked in his speech to huge cheers. “Who let the fucking drummer write the lyrics?! Rush did. Makes no sense!”
