This is the “morpherotic” dream girl who O-TOWN, the original US version of HEAR’SAY, fantasise about in their debut single, ‘LIQUID DREAMS’.
NME has spliced together the ultimate Identikit “beauty queen”, as desired by the world’s most manufactured boyband. O-Town featured in ABC’s ‘Making The Band’, which, like ‘Popstars’, showed the auditions and eventual success of the band.
They went to Number One in America with their first single, ‘Liquid Dreams’, and this week they are in the UK to promote its release here on April 16. The typical boyband effort is about a fantasy girl who morphs into all the famous women mentioned in the song.
The lyrics include the lines “She’s a morpherotic dream from a magazine” and “She’s a dominatrix supermodel beauty queen”. The upbeat pop number then namechecks several famous women who the boys dream about. O-Town sing that they want “a girl who’s a mix of Destiny’s Child“ with “a little touch of Madonna‘s wild style”, along with “Janet Jackson‘s smile, throw in a body like Jennifer’s“, as in Jennifer Lopez.
The lads also demand “Angelina Jolie’s lips to kiss in the dark/ Underneath Cindy C’s beauty mark/When it comes to the test, well, Tyra’s [supermodel, Banks] the best/And Salma Hayek brings the rest”. But at the end they admit that looks aren’t everything, singing: “Looks ain’t everything she’s got the sweetest personality like Halle B”, referring US film star Halle Berry
“Hopefully, we’ll do as good as Hear’say when our single is released in the UK,” said the group’s Dan Miller. But he admitted that he hadn’t previously heard of the British ‘Popstars’ band, which shifted 550,000 copies in its first week.
Meanwhile, O-Town have issued a warning to young fans using their official website about the threat of paedophiles. Fans are told to be wary of impostors claiming to be members of the band. The warning says: “We have had incidents recently where impostors are pretending to be members of the group, and have misled fans into situations that are not only dishonest, but also very dangerous. This is a serious situation, and O-Town wants to make sure their names are not used to lead unknowing fans into any potentially dangerous situations.”
