The guitarist and songwriter steps down from all overseas touring with the band halfway through their worldwide jaunt...

Oasis have finally ended a morning of speculation about their future with a statement declaring Noel Gallagher is to quit all overseas touring for the band with immediate effect.

A statement on the band’s website Matt Deighton[/a], who has recently performed with Paul Weller and Mother Earth. Matt and Gem Archer will share the guitar playing in the band. Unfortunately, working in the new guitarist will mean losing some of the French shows, but we’re confident we’ll hit the ground running with a great live show in Milan next Tuesday night, 30th May. All of the band’s European and UK shows from Milan will go ahead as scheduled.”

As previously reported on nme.com, Noel walked away from the band yesterday said to be sick of life on the road and brother Liam‘s excessive drinking. However, with Noel standing down, it is Liam who is the senior member and in effect band leader. It is unclear how this will impact on the long term future of the band.

As well as tonight’s show in Paris, the next three French shows – Rennes (May 25) Clermont Ferrand (May 27) and Amneville (May 28) – are also cancelled.
