Oasis, Stone Roses and David Bowie dominate Radio X’s Best British Song poll

Arctic Monkeys, The Verve and Rolling Stones also feature in top ten

Oasis have dominated a poll by Radio X to establish the best British songs of all time.

The poll, which saw over 50,000 votes cast by listeners of the station, saw Oasis hold four of the top five positions including ‘Wonderwall’ at Number One. That was followed by ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ (2), ‘Champagne Supernova’ (3) and ‘Live Forever’ (4).

The only non-Oasis song in the top five was The Stone Roses‘ ‘I Am The Resurrection’ at Number 5.

Speaking to Radio X, Noel Gallagher said: “What can I say? The people have spoken.”

He added: “The fact that there wasn’t one single Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds song in the top 20 makes think the whole thing is a mockery of an unreliable sham! Saying that though I’m thrilled. Thanks for voting.”

The comments came after a recent interview in which he called younger brother Liam a “very angry man” and repeated his lack of interest in reforming the band.

Elsehwere on the list, The Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ came in at number nine and the late David Bowie figures twice with ‘Heroes’ and ‘Life on Mars?’ coming seventh and eighth. The Rolling Stones round off the top 10 with ‘Gimme Shelter’.

In addition to votes from listeners, Radio X also polled bands and artists. Liam Gallagher chose ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ by The Rolling Stones though the track didn’t make the top 100.

Wolf Alice nominating winning track ‘Wonderwall’, and Jack Garratt chose Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ as his ultimate British record. Elsewhere, Radio X DJ Chris Moyles opted for Coldplay’s ‘Viva la Vida’. John Robins went for ‘Common People’ by Pulp, and Vernon Kay backed Sex Pistol’s ‘Anarchy in the UK’.
