Oasis, Glasvegas help kick off Benicassim 2009

More sound problems for the Gallaghers in Spain

Oasis and Glasvegas helped kick off the Benicassim festival in Spain last night (July 16) and into the early hours of this morning (17) by playing on the Escenario Verde stage – the largest at the festival.

The Gallagher brothers’ set drew an enormous crowd of ecstatic fans but was hit by a few sound problems, while later in the night the Glasvegas frontman James Allan paid tribute to the Manchester legends from the stage.

During Oasis‘ set, which started at 11pm (CEST), the sound cut out during ‘Wonderwall’, with singer Liam Gallagher leaving the stage looking agitated.

Brother Noel began playing acoustically, with Liam returning shortly afterwards. The band then started the aborted song again and successfully completed it.

Oasis went on to complete their fantastically-well received set, climaxing with their customary cover of The Beatles‘I Am The Walrus’. Watch video footage of the show by scrolling down and clicking below.

At 1:30am Glasvegas took to the stage and opened with ‘Geraldine’, frontman Allan giving regular shout-outs to nearby city “Valencia!”.

The vest-wearing singer/guitarist (pictured) paid tribute to Oasis by playing their hit ‘Live Forever’ solo, singing and playing electric guitar. The rendition prompted an enormous crowd sing-along, before the band cut into their own song ‘Flowers And Football Tops’.

Their set included a pared-down cover of The Ronettes‘Be My Baby’, while they ended the show with customary set-closer ‘Daddy’s Gone’.

Earlier in the evening Mystery Jets had played on the same stage, after Scottish indie rockers The View.

Over on the Escenario Fiberfib.com stage post-punk legends Gang Of Four played a set, while in the Vodafone FIB Club venue The Walkmen and Telepathe impressed crowds enjoying the scorching heat.

The musical action continues tonight at Benicassim with Kings Of Leon, Paul Weller, Maximo Park, The Horrors and Magazine all set to play.

Foals had been set to play at the festival tomorrow (July 18) but have cancelled due to two members being ill.
