The songs you wanted to see in our poll include 'Don't Look Back In Anger', 'Imagine' and, er, 'Another Day In Paradise'...
OASIS‘ ‘DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER’, Joy Division‘s ‘IMAGINE’ and ‘PARANOID ANDROID’ by RADIOHEAD should have all been included in NME’s poll of the 100 Greatest Singles Of All Time, according to you, the NME.COM readers.
In our November 16 issue we compiled a list of the singles we felt were the best since NME printed the first ever chart 50 years ago, on November 14, 1952.
In our Top Five were Smiths’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, Nirvana‘s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Sex Pistols‘ ‘Anarchy In The UK’, Rolling Stones ‘Paint It, Black’ and [/a]’s ”Heroes”. The rest of the Ten featured Stone Roses, [a], [/a], [a] and Oasis. We asked you to vote, via NME.COM for the 101st single – the song that you feel should’ve been on the list.
And it transpires that there just wasn’t enough Oasis for you lot. Despite ‘Live Forever’ coming in at Number 8 and ‘Supersonic’ at Number 34, by far the biggest outcry was because of ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ didn’t make it.
One fan said: “It’s easily their best single, and stands apart from the rest because of Noel’s stunning vocal.”
Oasis fans were also bemused at the omission of ‘Some Might Say’. “Their first UK Number One not worthy of comment? Come on NME, that’s a disgrace”, Barney Simpson wrote.
Another “glaring omission” was Radiohead‘s ‘Paranoid Android’, a Top Three hit in 1997. “What can I say,” Paul Coleman wrote. “That single changed everything for Radiohead and started an amazing three year creative period, leading to them conquering the world. To only include ‘Creep’ in the list is totally missing the point.”
Other singles that you feel should’ve been in the list were [a][/a]’s ‘Imagine’, (“Not a great single, but there’s no doubt about the worldwide impact. Isn’t that worth something?”) and REM‘s ‘Losing My Religion’ (“No REM in the Top 100 is like rewriting history” said Thomas Stone.).
NME.COM stresses that some of you should maybe get out more. One reader who will remain nameless thinks Phil Collins’ ‘Another Day In Paradise’ should be there. Less said about that the better…
