Odd Future member says group have ‘shed that name’

The Internet's Matt Martians addresses recent speculation that the hip-hop collective have disbanded

A member of hip-hop collective Odd Future has spoken about the group’s future following recent suggestions made by members Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt that the rap collective may have disbanded.

Fans grew concerned earlier this year when Tyler tweeted that “although its no more, those 7 letters are forever”. It was thought that he was referring to the initials of the band’s full title ‘OFWGKTA’ (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All).

Responding to speculation a day later, Tyler tweeted: “All I was doing was looking at old photos with friends and thinking about how time flies, crazy how one tweet can stir so much”. Later, however, Earl Sweatshirt said Tyler had been “solidifying the obvious”, reigniting rumours of the band’s demise.

Now, Matt Martians of The Internet, a neo-soul group also consisting of Odd Future’s Syd the Kyd, has stated that the collective have “shed that name”.

Martians told All Hip Hop of the recent public dispute: “It needed to be said, because I think it’s important for our progress, and other people in Odd Future’s progress, to shed that name. It’s a badge. It’s a great thing. Everything has to move on. Everything has to have closure.”

He added: “I think what rose from that is what really matters. A lot of great careers spawned from that, and a lot of great careers will continue to spawn from that.”

Tyler The Creator was recently filmed coercing a fan to eat vomit for £20 at one of his live shows. During the video, Tyler was seen paying a fan £20 to climb onstage and eat vomit from a soaked towel in front of the entire audience.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at the O2 Academy in Bristol during May. Watch the clip here.
