Simon Cowell says One Direction should pursue solo side-projects

Mentor says five-piece should do ‘whatever they want’

Simon Cowell has said One Direction should all pursue solo side-projects as well as staying with the band.

Various members of One Direction are known to be pursuing solo activities away from the band, as well as beginning work on a follow-up to 2014’s album Four.

One%20Direction%20manager%20Cowell%20 told The Sun: “We’ve said to the boys ‘All of you should do other things. If you want to work with me, do some stuff on your own.’ They should be allowed to do whatever they want.”

Zayn Malik is guesting on a track for Naughty Boy’s next album, while Liam Payne is working with rapper Juicy J. Louis Tomlinson is joining Cowell as a judge in Sony Music talent contest Be In The Band. Harry Styles is writing songs for other artists under the name Mick Greenberg. Cowell said: “I love the fact that Louis wants to do something with me, but I’m doing stuff with all the boys.”

The band are currently on tour in Singapore, where Niall Horan posted a Spotify playlist of his favourite Irish artists. It includes songs by James Vincent McMorrow, Hozier and Damien Rice.
