Adele and One Direction saw huge global sales

One in eight albums sold around the world during 2013 was made by a British artist or band.

A new report by the BPI published today (August 1) shows evidence that artists such as Adele, One Direction and Mumford & Sons have helped British music account for 13 percent of all albums sold globally during the year of 2013.

One Direction proved most popular around the world with three albums in the top ten. Their latest album, ‘Midnight Memories’, was the best selling British album of the year with their 2012 album ‘Take Me Home’ also proving popular a year after its release. Similarly, the boyband’s 2011 debut ‘Up All Night’ was the tenth biggest seller of the year.

A number of big selling albums in 2013 were actually released before the start of the year with Adele’s ’21’ and ‘Babel’ by Mumford & Sons in the top three.

The BPI’s Gennaro Castaldo said in a statement: “For home-grown talent to have recorded the world’s biggest-selling album six out of the last seven years is a phenomenal achievement that says a great deal about the popularity of British music around the world, especially taking into account the fact that one in every eight albums sold globally are by UK artists.

“Aside from the obvious contribution to British exports, this success underlines the vital role that our music and artists play in promoting the appeal of British culture around the world.”
