One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson buys Doncaster Rovers

Boyband member will be co-chairman of League One club alongside John Ryan

One Direction‘s Louis Tomlinson has completed his takeover of Doncaster Rovers FC.

The boyband member will stage a press conference in London at 4pm today (June 19) to confirm his takeover. In the meantime, a spokesperson for current club chairman Ryan told Press Association Sport that “it is done, the takeover is complete.”

The pop star has joined forces with the football club’s former owner John Ryan. Tomlinson, 22, and the Ryan, 64, will act as co-chairmen of the club. The deal was finalised after an issue with Tomlinson’s image rights from his management company was resolved.

Speaking to Doncaster Free Press, John Ryan was keen to promote his co-chairman as being the right man for the job. “He’s as keen as mustard. He can’t be there all of the time because he’s on tour and things like that but I said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll keep you informed by email, by text, by phone’. He wants to know everything that’s going on and I’m delighted that he’s so keen.”

He added: “Eventually, I sincerely hope he takes over the club from myself and takes it on to greater and greater heights. I think that with Louis on board, anything is possible.”

Tomlinson was recently involved in a minor scandal following the emergence of a video which seems to show him and his bandmate Zayn Malik smoking a “joint” in the back of a car. It is claimed that the video was filmed on April 27 while the singers were being driven through Lima, Peru on their way to a gig at the Estadio Nacional. The five-minute video appears to be filmed by Tomlinson, who is heard saying, “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!” It is not illegal to possess a small amount of cannabis in Peru. The rest of the band are not present in the video.
