The boy band dominated the social network this year
In an analysis of the tweets from its 15 million active users in the UK, the social networking site said the year’s biggest spike was during Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid in March, which led to the team being knocked out of the champions league. Andy Murray’s Wimbledon victory and people wishing followers a happy new year were the other biggest moments on the site.
The top musical moment of the year was Mumford And Sons closing the Sunday night of Glastonbury Festival with a cover of The Beatles’ ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’.
One Direction collectively accounted for three of the top five most retweeted messages worldwide. The band’s Niall Horan had his birthday post – “Yesss! I’m 20! Wohooo! No more teens!” – shared 375,000 times. Meanwhile, a picture of Harry Styles asleep by bandmate Zayn Malik was retweeted 344,000 times. Malik’s tweet thanking fans for their best wishes on his engagement was retweeted 336,000 times by fans.
The most retweeted messages of the year were from Glee actor Lea Michele, thanking fans for their support over the death of her co-star Cory Monteith, with 408,000 retweets, and news of actor Paul Walker’s death which got 400,000 retweets.
