Frank Ocean producer Malay calls Zayn Malik “pure genius”

The pair are working together on Malik's debut solo record

Producer Malay has tweeted about his work on Zayn Malik’s debut solo record, calling the former One Direction man “pure genius”.

“Cat’s out the bag,” Malay wrote, “it’s no secret we’ve been working. ‪Zayn is pure genius. An artists’ artist. A shining star with a genuine heart.”

Malay has an impressive production resume, having previously worked with Frank Ocean on ‘Channel Orange’, as well as with John Legend, Angel Haze, Tune-Yards, Alicia Keys and Big Boi.

Few details have leaked on Malik’s studio work to date.

Malik left One Direction back in March, issuing the following statement: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

He later added that he had left the band to make “real music”.

The singer’s had an eventful few months since, signing with RCA, and being offered guidance by 50 Cent and collaborations with Odd Future man Tyler, The Creator, as well as splitting with fiancée Perrie Edwards.

Last month, Malik called Calvin Harris a “dickhead” in a dispute over attitudes to music’s value.
