Paul McCartney plays the classics at Electric Proms gig

The Beatles star wows crowd at the Roundhouse

Beatles legend Paul McCartney dished up an explosive spectacle of classic hits last night (October 25) at London‘s Roundhouse, in celebration of the second night of the BBC Electric Proms.

Watched by members of Kaiser Chiefs, The Reverend, comedians Harry Hill and Stephen Merchant, DJ Chris Evans and Kyle Falconer from The View, the anticipation was palpable as the crowd gave the legendary artist a hero’s welcome.

Delving into his past, the singer mixed Beatles classics and solo hits with a rendition of the epic James Bond theme ’Live And Let Die’, in addition to Wings‘ 1974 favourite ’Band On The Run’.

Kicking off proceedings in unexpected style, the dapper-suited McCartney dived straight into the psychedelic hits with ’Magical Mystery Tour’, before crooning his way through ’Got To Get You Into My Life’ to the delight of the masses who packed the venue.

Addressing the euphoric crowds, he declared: “Welcome to the Roundhouse. It’s been a little while since I was here. We’re gonna have a good night.”

Removing his suit jacket and rolling up his sleeves, he soon set to work, unveiling an eight-piece string section, before playing ’Only Mama Knows’ from his latest album ’Memory Almost Full’.

Taking time to read the dozens of signs fans had made in his honour, he read out one which said “two California girls love you”, before taking to the piano for ’The Long And Winding Road’.

The most heartfelt moment during the gig came when he dedicated ‘Here Today’ to John Lennon, explaining “this is the conversation I never had.”

The strings later came out in force once again for ’Eleanor Rigby’.

“It’s a full moon tonight,” he announced, before howling and launching into ’Back In The USSR’ and ’Live And Let Die’, as startling fireworks ignited from the two ends of the stage.

After leaving the stage, Paul McCartney returned clasping his heart, before affectionately teasing “you noisy people, you!”

He rounded off his epic return to Camden with ’Get Back’.
