Paul Weller rejected a CBE

Weller spokeswoman says: 'It wasn't really for him'

Paul Weller turned down a CBE in the New Year Honours list.

The former Jam man was offered a chance to become Commander of the British Empire during the 2006 birthday honours but rejected the offer.

In a statement a spokeswoman for Weller said: “Paul was surprised and flattered, but it wasn’t really for him.”

In 2000 David Bowie turned down a chance to become a CBE.

John Lennon returned his MBE in 1969 in protest at “the Nigeria- Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against ’Cold Turkey’ slipping down the charts”.
