Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder dedicates ‘Light Years’ to Ikey Owens during Detroit gig

US band were performing at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit last year

Pearl Jam‘s Eddie Vedder interrupted a gig in Detroit last night (October 15) to pay tribute to Jack White’s keyboard player Ikey Owens, who passed away earlier this week.

During a concert at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Vedder mentioned Owens’ death from a heart attack on Tuesday Billboard reports. “We send our heart out to [White] and his band… The only thing we can do is try to take energy here [at the concert] so we can remember [Owens] fondly,” Vedder said before dedicating the song ‘Light Years’ to the late musician.

Owens was a Grammy winning musician – who played keyboards in Jack White‘s band and also performed with The Mars Volta. He died in the early hours of yesterday (October 14) while on tour in Mexico.

A statement has been released that says drugs were not a factor in his passing. “The coroner has determined that Ikey Owens died from a heart attack the morning of October 14 at approximately 4am,” says the statement. “The only drugs found in his room was a small amount of marijuana.”

Jack White cancelled the remainder of his tour dates in Mexico following Owens’ death.
