Pet Shop Boys battling with Robin Thicke for first Number One album in 20 years

Jay-Z's 'Magna Carta Holy Grail' faces stiff competition in regaining the top spot

Jay-Z‘s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ is facing stiff competition for this week’s Number One album slot from Pet Shop Boys and Robin Thicke.

The rapper, who is currently top of the UK album charts with his 12th studio effort, is struggling to keep a stranglehold on the top spot in the midweek chart update. He currently lies at Number Three while fewer than 1,500 copies separate Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ and Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Electric’ as they compete for Number One, according to Official Chart Company data.

If the Pet Shop Boys do reach the summit with their twelfth studio album, it will be their first chart-topping LP in 20 years. ‘Very’ was their last album to reach the top spot back in October 1993.

Meanwhile, Avicii looks certain to score his second Number One of the year with ‘Wake Me Up’. The dance track has already sold 153,000 copies this week, that’s more than the previous four Number One singles sold in seven days. It is also on course to become the fastest selling single of 2013. He topped the charts earlier this year with ‘I Could Be The One’.

Check back on Sunday (July 21) to see if the Pet Shop Boys dethrone Jay-Z. Meanwhile you can read interviews with the collaborators who teamed up with the rapper in this week’s NME, on newsstands now or available digitally
