Phoenix singer asks fans to lift him up to the balcony for Shepherd’s Bush Empire encore – watch

French band play to a sold-out crowd on the day 'Bankrupt!' is released

Phoenix celebrated the release of their fifth album Bankrupt! yesterday (April 22), with a sold-out headline show at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

Coming on stage just after 9pm, the French band played an 80-minute set including songs from ‘Bankrupt!’, 2009’s ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ and their debut album ‘United’. Opening with recent single, ‘Entertainment’, the quartet were joined by additional members Thomas Hedlund on drums and keyboardist Robert Coudert.

“This is our first show [in London] since a very, very long time,” frontman Thomas Mars told the crowd after ‘Lasso’. The band – except Mars and guitarist Christian Mazzalai – then left the stage, leaving the remaining two to perform stripped down versions of Air’s ‘Playground Love’ and their own ‘Countdown’.

With all members back behind their instruments, the set also featured ‘Lisztomania’, ‘Consolation Prizes’, ‘1901’ and ‘Sunskrupt!’, a combined version of the songs ‘Bankrupt!’, ‘Love Like A Sunset Part I’ and ‘Love Like A Sunset Part II’.

Returning for a two-song encore, Mars announced to the audience “I want to see every one of you,” before making his way to the back of the standing area, climbing onto the sound desk and asking the fans on the balcony above to lift him onto their level. There, he sang a final burst of opening track ‘Entertainment’ before climbing back down and crowdsurfing back to the stage.
