Singer says she 'wasn't surprised' about violence

PJ Harvey has said that it was “just a matter of time” before the UK riots started and that she “wasn’t surprised” that they began when they did.

Talking to NME at Bestival following her Mercury Prizevictory, the singer spoke about the state of the country . To watch the video click above.

Having won the prize with an album called ‘Let England Shake’, about war and civil unrest, she was asked how she felt watching the riots unfold on TV. Harvey said: “I can’t say I was surprised. It was just a matter of time. [We will] just wait and see what the government chooses or what it puts in place to start addressing some of the issues that brought it about in the first place. We’ll have to wait and see.”

She added: “People are finding their voices. There’s been an awful amount of suppression and censorship. The world is becoming more and more based on moneymaking and less and less on supporting a good quality of life for everybody, and everything we’re seeing, people getting so frustrated that they feel like have to rise up, is partly because of this.”
