Portishead’s Geoff Barrow to score new series of ‘Black Mirror’

The multi-instrumentalist will team up with regular collaborator Ben Salisbury for the Charlie Brooker series

Portishead‘s Geoff Barrow will score the new series of Black Mirror.

The third season of the Charlie Brooker-created dystopian show will air on Netflix on October 21 after the streaming service outbid the show’s original network, Channel 4, for the rights back in March.

It has now been revealed that Barrow will team up with regular collaborator and composer Ben Salisbury, who together have written music for Alex Garland’s sci-fi thrillers Annihilation and Ex Machina as well as the Ben Wheatley-directed Free Fire, to pen the music for the forthcoming new season of Black Mirror.

Black Mirror, which ran for two seasons on Channel 4 in 2011 and 2013, explores the world of human nature within the digital age, with running themes of contemporary techno-paranoia throughout its episodes.

The series has received an international Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, and a Rose D’Or – as well as being nominated for a BAFTA.

Brooker said of the move to Netflix that: “Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that Black Mirror feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true.”

Parks and Recreation and The Office US star Rashida Jones has co-written an episode for the new series, with Brooker saying of the news: “It turned out [she] was a fan of the show, and the feelings were mutual.”

Bryce Dallas Howard, Alice Eve, Wyatt Russell and Mackenzie Davis will also appear in new episodes.

“People are always coming up to me and saying ‘That’s a bit Black Mirror‘… [but] I didn’t see Pokémon GO coming,” Brooker recently said at Comic Con.

He added: “It’s fair to say that this season, some of the ideas are because we were aware of the greater progress of the world, that you’ve got to go two steps forward to stay ahead of reality at the moment… There are things that are more demented than Pokémon GO within this season.”
